About four months ago, I got a call from a guy called Herman. Over just one call, he finalized me. I was in Goa when he called. He was in Doha. The advance was transferred the next day and I blocked my date.
After few months, I was finally in Delhi to shoot his Roka ceremony. I reached Herman’s house in Fateh Nagar on a Sunday morning. He welcomed me to his room (which was rather sexy from inside), offered me coke and then went to get ready. Once he was ready, he looked like Honey Singh. Not in terms of face resemblance. But overall personality.
We were soon ready to leave for a nearby Gurdwara – Herman, myself, some of his close family members and friends. The plan was to do a pooja in Gurudwara and then leave for a restaurant in Rajaouri Garden where the formal Roka ceremony would take place.

I met Gargi (Herman’s finacee) for the first time in the Gurdwara. She looked stunning. She looked like the next model Fair & Lovley might be looking for, she was that good looking.
By the way, a rather funny thing happened as I was clicking their pictures on the street outside the Gurdwara. A guy standing on one side of the street, called me – ‘bhaiya, jara idhar aana’. I went to him. He asked me – ‘Who are these guys? Some celebrity? Film stars?’ I felt like laughing on his face. ‘They are punjabi super-stars, don’t you know?’, I could have told him and he would have bought, but one doesn’t lie in such holy places. I just told him the truth and carried on. So I wasn’t the only person who thought Gargi was stunning enough to be a star and that Herman’s personality was like that of the new Punjabi Bhangra star Honey Singh. :) Anyway, there was one more star right there outside the Gurdwara. This dude below! Full dude only!
From the Gurdwara to the restaurant where the Roka was, I was requested to drive a car. There was an extra car but no one knew how to drive, that’s why. I was cool. Sitting next to me was Preet – Herman’s best friend. ‘I am an airline pilot, can fly a plane. But abhi car pe haath nahi baitha hai’, he explained to me’.
We were soon at the Roka venue. A place called Wok in the Clouds. No it’s not walk. It’s wok only. God knows why! May be the owner didn’t like his English teacher when he was a kid. LOL! But it was a nice cosy and posh place irrespective of what its name was.
Here in the restaurant, there were a lot of people. Almost all of them kept offering laddoos to the the couple. And kept plastering tilaks on their foreheads. And when they were not doing that, they were generally being happy. And beautiful. Sikh ceremonies never get boring. I am sure the pictures below will speak for themselves!
As the ceremony was about to get over, Gargi’s brother got very emotional. The sister hugged her brother. And then she shed few tears herself. And so did their mother!

About two weeks ago, Herman booked me for a Roka shoot in Delhi. The shoot was scheduled for a Sunday. When in Delhi, I stay with Ankit. His Mondays are off. So I decided to extend my stay and spend time with Ankit on Monday and shoot some of the new (and some old) products to be used for his online gift-portal dezains.com.
A model-look-out notice on FaceBook helped us find two male and two female models (one guy would later ditched us).
The photo-shoot finally took place last Monday. We had allotted about six hours for the purpose. The start itself got delayed as we could not find the bar to hang the white backdrop. After some time, a make shift rod was procured from a hardware shop and while trying to setup the backdrop, one of the light stands fell down breaking a speedlight in two pieces. We just went ahead and carried the entire shoot with just two speedlights – one through a softbox and other bare.
Ankit’s fiancée Smriti was with us throughout and she not only helped the girls get ready, but also posed with various products herself. Everyone was dead tired by the end of six hours, but we were happy to have some nice original pictures which Ankit can now use on dezains.com. Hope you like some of the samples here.

The train journey from Ahmedabad to Patna (followed by the early morning taxi ride from Patna to Deoghar) left us very tired. We reached Deoghar in the morning and the reception was in the evening itself. Thankfully, Subbu had taken a flight to Patna, and thus had already been in Deoghar since two days. He had been made responsible for making sure that all arrangements were in place. He did a good job. And was obviously tired (as can be seen). By the way, Subbu was also the only photographer for the reception. As if, he had not worked hard enough! But then, there is a reason we have brothers, don’t we? And sisters.
Sweety helped Princy get ready. But what was beyond help was trying to source a chunni that fit Princy’s sari. Princy had not realized till the last moment that she was supposed to have a chunni over her head. So she had not brought anything along. And no one else in the house had anything matching to offer. With a cold heart, Princy finally went ahead with the best option available (now that I look at the picture, it doesn’t look too bad anyway, or does it)? However, Princy hated the way she finally looked. Till date, I am not allowed to share reception pictures with anyone.
During the planning stage, Papa and I had debated if we really needed to have a reception in Deoghar. But I was sure I wanted one. How else could I take blessings from Baba-Dadi before starting a married life? They were too frail to travel to Ahmedabd for the wedding. And this reception was for them, than for anyone else!
From Princy’s side, other than my sasurji and sasuma, Rajesh Mama-Mami and Biren uncle also came down all the way from Ahmedabad to attend the rather simple reception that we could put together. And of course, I am glad that some of my relatives who had not been able to attend the wedding itself, dropped by to bless Princy and I (especially my badi mami – whom I love very much and Sweety’s sas-sasur). It was also great to have some special people who had already attended the wedding in Ahmedabad and yet managed to save enough energy to be with us in Deoghar – Amitji, Bullu uncle, Sujata chachi & their adorable daugthers (my cousins) Disha & Arya, Baby didi, Shailendar uncle and of course my adorable nana-nani.
